Engineers Without Borders in Dominica providing support and advice to Housing & Planning Ministry12/6/2017 Engineers Without Borders are on island trying to assist, by giving the best building techniques that they have seen, from countries which have been in similar situations as Dominica. They are also providing support and advice to the Ministry of Housing, and to the Planning Division.
During the final training workshop on Building Codes in Roseau on Tuesday 5th December 2017, representative from Engineers without Borders, Mike Paddock said, “We are here at the invitation of the Ministry of Housing and Planning, to provide support and advice to them, so as to move through this reconstruction process as quickly as possible. We started with a building damage assessment. We have about 2,000 structures completed on the island and by the end of the year, hopefully, we will have all of them completed, and that information has helped us inform some of the changes that we are talking about at these trainings”. Paddock added that the plan is to update the guides, and have more inspections and reviews during the building; “So the strategy is to take that information, and update our guides with the best practices that you builders have been using. The plan is to move forward with a process where we are going to have more technical assistance, plan reviews and inspections during the project, or during the reconstruction”.
