Finance Minister Dr Irving McIntyre says Dominica makes history as First CARICOM Nation to produce Geothermal Electricity

Dominica has achieved a historic milestone in its clean energy transition, becoming the first CARICOM member state to successfully generate electricity using its domestic geothermal resources. The breakthrough was highlighted during the 2026/2027 Budget Address as the government advances its long-term strategy to achieve a 100 percent renewable energy grid. 

Recent figures reflect significant progress toward this goal, with renewable sources accounting for 68 percent of DOMLEC’s total electricity supply in June 2026—led by geothermal power at 43 percent and hydroelectricity at 25 percent. Finance Minister Dr. Irving McIntyre emphasized that drawing power directly from Dominican soil serves as a vital foundation for national progress and energy self-sufficiency. 

The nation's geothermal plant has completed key reliability testing and is nearing full commercial operations, with the Independent Regulatory Commission set to monitor performance and evaluate impacts on utility rates during the initial three months.To support the expanded capacity, the government has completed major infrastructure upgrades, installing 19 kilometers of high-voltage transmission lines alongside modernized substations at Padu, Trafalgar, and Fond Cole. 

Looking ahead, authorities are assessing options to boost yield in the Roseau Valley and exploring additional geothermal prospects in northern Dominica. While Dr. McIntyre noted that geothermal power will not immediately remove all charges from electricity bills, he affirmed that it will shield local consumers from volatile global fuel market prices.
