Since the Dominica Labour Party’s appointment into government in the year 2000, reports indicate, that the DLP has shown no major interest in developing the agricultural sector. Despite all the natural resources available, the DLP leader has repeatedly said in public, that Dominica is extremely limited in resources, painting an incorrect picture of the actual resources available for production. Former United Workers Party Agriculture Minister Peter Carbon says Dominica at present, has the potential to supply many crops for export to various markets, if the government vigorously secures the export markets, and provides the necessary assistance to local farmers for production, as was done under the governance of the Freedom Party and the United Workers Party. Documents indicate that both parties were able to achieve greater economic wealth for the country, in a shorter space of time than the Dominica Labour party. The Freedom party served in government from 1985 to 1995, United Workers Party served in government from 1995 to 2000, however, the DLP has been in Government from 2000, to present, and have not been able to effectively stimulate substantial wealth among the population.
Meanwhile, Carbon says for effective commercialization of the agriculture sector, there are a number of regulations which need to be implemented. Carbon says some of these regulations were passed under the UWP Government but never implemented under this current administration. He made mention of the Sale of Produce Act.
