Forestry Division selects “Protect our Endangered Species” as the theme for World Wildlife Day 20172/22/2017 “Protect our Endangered Species” is this year’s theme chosen by the Forestry, Wildlife and National Parks Division for World Wildlife Day observed every year on March 3rd. The theme is meant to raise awareness about three (3) endangered species in particular; the Sisserou Parrot, Mountain Chicken and turtle species.
According to a release, throughout the years, the Division has embarked on strategic projects aimed at conserving, managing and protecting endangered species found in Dominica. Ongoing projects include; 1. Parrot Conservation Project 2. Mountain Chicken Project 3. Sea Turtle and Research Project. The Division is involved in the preparation of resource materials, education outreach in schools and communities, and coordination of data collection and monitoring. As a Small Island Developing State (SIDS), Dominica is exposed to several unique vulnerabilities such as the impact of Climate Change and economic impact of natural disasters. Hence, the Forestry, Wildlife and National Parks Division is seeking a participatory role in the sustainable management of Dominica’s wildlife, so that Dominica will remain the Nature Isle of the Caribbean for generations to come.
