Photo: DA Vibes Former Pierre Charles Secondary School (PCSS) student & valedictorian, Dr Royette Tavernier, has advised PCSS Graduates to spend more time working to achieve their goals, and less time thinking about what they want to do. She gave that advice at their graduation ceremony at the school’s auditorium, on Friday 23rd June 2017.
In keeping with the theme of the graduating class, ‘Setting goals to inspire and encourage’. She told them, “I would like to share with you three life lessons that I have learnt over the years. Lesson number one; In order to set goals, you must discover your purpose in life. Lesson number two; use your adversity to inspire your purpose in life. And lesson number three; remember that it is your responsibility to encourage each other”. She said, while it is important to set goals, students should focus more on what they want to do, because if they spend all their time invested in becoming one specific thing, they risk limiting their true potential, while setting themselves up for possible disappointment, if it doesn’t work out. She added; “If you spend your time investing in actually doing things, then you end up with a world of possibilities, you begin to learn that there may be actual different roads that you can take, that will lead you to a successful and satisfying life”. Moreover, she noted that no one can tell them what is their true purpose in life, but She acknowledged that some people might see their strength, and others will point out their weaknesses, ultimately they have to think hard and deep, not about where they have come from, but where they intend to go. Dr Tavernier concluded by saying; “So, don’t be afraid to dream and dream big. Set high expectations for yourselves, regardless of your current situation. Remember, that wherever your purpose in life takes you, remember that instead of looking for handouts and taking the easy way out, it is important to remember that you need to keep your dignity, by working hard, & actually earning your achievements”.
