Government says it will provide 1,100 new jobs to engage persons who were made redundant and displaced by Hurricane Maria. Cabinet has taken a decision to provide the jobs to assist those persons because of the impact Hurricane Maria has had on their lives. Maria struck Dominica on September 18th, and 4 months after the storm, many people are still jobless. These jobs will be funded by the CBI program, and will be for skilled and unskilled individuals. Finance Minster and PM Roosevelt Skerrit made the announcement via a live broadcast from his office on Wednesday. A Unit will be responsible for managing these new jobs expected to take effect March 1st, 2018 and will be separate from the National Employment program. Cabinet Secretary Steve Ferrol is expected to speak to the initiative next Monday. Meantime Mr Skerrit says government will also begin an autonomous rapid response social recovery agency to assist those most affected. Mr Skerrit says that agency will replace the public support program, popularly referred to as the 'Red Clinic', but will continue to have the mandate of the public support program.
