Little over a week since Brazil sent a delegation to Guyana and Suriname to discuss and pledge military assistance over their long-running border dispute with Venezuela, Guyana has dispatched Guyanese Defence Force (GDF) personnel to the Guyanese-Venezuelan border to monitor and possibly repel Venezuelan gangs that may wish to destabilize and cause havoc within its borders.
Minister of state, Joseph Harmon, has been quoted as saying: “We have had several reports in that area of Venezuelans crossing, we have had reports of Venezuelan civilians crossing over so there are a lot of activities in that area and we have taken note of it and certainly our presence will be much more and much regular than it is right now.” The mineral rich, and recently the now oil rich area has been a hotspot for the Venezuelan “Sindicato” gang’s activities, who have been responsible for number civilian attacks in and around the border area.
