You don’t put your party before your community, and if you have a good village council, then community should always come before party, says Dominican-born first black councilor, first race committee chair and a deputy mayor in England, Franklyn Georges. Georges who was speaking on the importance of having a village council, with educated councilors without political bias says anytime one puts Political Party before community, it automatically negates its purpose. He gave the example of holding discussions with the intention of keeping people informed, making them aware of progress, and providing them with the opportunity to raise issues or concerns. He was speaking on the Governance and the Economy program aired on Qfm on Monday night at the time of the statements. Meantime, Georges is advocating for persons to get a firm understanding of who they are as a people, and believes that the first step is education. Georges says that he has witnessed this lack of self-knowledge throughout Dominica suggest that local history should be taught as part of the curriculum and not just one month in a year. Additionally, he added that the strength of the local government could put on the pressure to the government in order to make this and other areas of knowledge a reality. Georges who is from the village of Salisbury, along with other members of the Salisbury Committee have been taking necessary steps to make a village council a reality.
