IOM Team Leader in Dominica sees the extensive damage by Hurricane Maria in Dominica, as a challenge12/11/2017 International Organization for Migration Team Leader Jan Willem Wegdam has deemed the extent of the damage caused by Hurricane Maria in Dominica, as a challenge. Wegdam noted some statistics which he deemed to be “Very Concerning.” According to the IOM Team Leader he has received information 6000 Dominican Families do not have a home, about 33% of Dominicans are now living with family relatives, the clearing process at the port is still a bit slow, the unemployment is has sharply increased among others. Wegdam says the team at one point felt overwhelmed, however he says the work has just started. Jan Willem Wegdam spoke to Q95 news on Thursday. Meanwhile, Wegdan says his team was involved in the recent upgrading of Dominica’s building codes, post Hurricane Maria. Wegdam told Q95 news the majority of the building codes which currently exist in Dominica meet international standards, however, he realized that there has been neglect in using the proper building codes in construction in Dominica. Meantime, Wegdam says his team has advised the Government to increase the labour force, in an effort to assist Dominicans who are in shelters and have lost their entire homes, by providing effective temporary solutions.
Wegdam also said the prefab structures being imported by the government is good, but not good enough, and is requesting more be done in providing housing relief.
