Speaking on the evolution of her community, Chief Thomas-Sanford described the Kalinagos journey as one built on a strong foundation that has been strengthened through generations. She noted that this continuity is a testament to the collective wisdom and perseverance of the people. Highlighting a broader perspective, the Chief asserted that while the Kalinago are often recognized as Dominica’s indigenous population, they should be acknowledged as the indigenous peoples of the entire Caribbean. Chief Thomas-Sanford has called on Caribbean leaders to extend greater support toward the development of the Kalinago people. She underscored the long-overdue rehabilitation of the Kalinago Council’s office, which was destroyed by Hurricane Maria in 2017 and remains unrepaired.
