Tens of thousands of people have been killed and scores more injured by a huge earthquake which struck south-eastern Turkey, near the Syrian border, in the early morning hours of Monday 6thFebruary 2023. The earthquake, which hit near the town of Gaziantep, was closely followed by numerous aftershocks, including one quake which was almost as large as the first. On the national level, Rotary clubs in Turkey have donated tents, clothes, and heaters, and are trying to buy shipping containers that can be turned into makeshift shelters. Rotary leaders there are in regular communication with Shelter Box and Habitat for Humanity International, providing them support and invaluable situational awareness. Kenneth O'Brien, president of the Rotary Club of Portsmouth, expressed gratitude for the help provided by club members to those affected by the recent earthquakes in Turkey & Syria.
