On Wednesday 17th January 2018 Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, announced cabinet’s decision to create 1,100 jobs to engage those made redundant and displaced by Hurricane Maria. Additionally, On 22 January 2018, Cabinet Secretary Steve Ferrol explained that special supervision of the program “will remain under the portfolio of the Prime Minister and it will be administered through the cabinet secretary and under the general supervision of the Secretary to the Cabinet.” He said the program is transitional, and will be operated for a period of six months in the first instance and is expected to be up and running on March 1. However Leader of the Dominica Freedom Party Kent Vital is in disbelief of what he classifies as the government’s failure in creating significant job employment, after three terms in public office. Vital says this initiative will not be transparent, because of what he says is petty behavior exhibited by political individuals within the administration. However, the DFP Leader says though the initiative sounds positive, he is concerned about the administration’s track record of providing supporters with opportunities, and willfully sidelining Independent neutral citizens or supporters of other political parties.
