Library Week May 8 – 13, 2017 will be observed under the theme ‘Libraries: Centre of All Knowledge’5/8/2017 Library Week May 8 – 13, 2017 will be observed by the Dominica Library and Information Service (DLIS), under the theme, ‘Libraries: Centre of All Knowledge’, with several activities to engage various community groups.The observance of Library Week each year provides an opportunity to reflect on the achievements of libraries, promote library use, encourage community participation and celebrate the contributions of librarians and library workers.
The Roseau Public Library celebrates by holding a poetry competition for primary schools of Roseau & environs, exhibition documenting nature through photography and rare items in the library’s collection, interactive sessions on event management protocol, journalism, photography and music as careers, a herbal tea tasting day, outreach to Dominica State Prison, movie days and a Children’s fun day. The Portsmouth Library and the Mobile Library celebrates with a Read-A-Thon, poetry, elocution, short story and spelling bee contests, information session on online catalogue searching, storytelling, movie and games days. At Grand Bay, the Branch Library will celebrate by engaging community groups and students in sexual abuse sessions, time management, online information searching and music as a career, Bagatelle Primary visit for craft time, community Pre-schoolers will engage in show and tell and staff visit three home-bound elderlies.The Marigot Branch Library will connect with students of primary and secondary schools and provide information skills training. The National Documentation Centre and National Archives Unit marks this important week with lectures focus on the effects of climate change and sensitization sessions and interactive tours.Schools island wide are expected to hold activities highlighting and promoting their school libraries. The Official opening ceremony will be held today Monday 8th May at 10 am, at the Portsmouth Library. An Amnesty period will be on-going for the entire month of May 2017 at all public libraries (Roseau, Portsmouth, Grandbay and Marigot). Members are being urged to return overdue items to their Library, at no charge for overdue items returned during that period. A staff gathering will bring the Week to a close on Saturday May 13, 2017.
