Local DMFA Fencers return successfully from 2018 Pan American Cadet and Junior Fencing Championship3/15/2018 The Dominica Fencing Association (DMFA) was very well represented at the 2018 Pan American Cadet and Junior Fencing Championship by Khalil Alishaw and Ethan Yankey. The fencers, who were accompanied by DMFA Secretary Jacob Alishaw, returned to Dominica on Saturday March 10, 2018.
Alishaw and Yankey participated in both the Foil and Epée disciplines in the Junior and Cadet categories, where they obtained their first international rankings. Alishaw is now ranked at 345 in Foil and 398 in Epée’; and Yankey at 347 in Foil and 400 in Epée in the Junior Category. There has not been a ranking posted as yet for the Cadet category. Dominica was the only CARICOM country represented at this tournament. It was also the first time participating at this level. In the past, Dominica was represented at the senior level by Cody Morris in 2016 in Panama and again in Montreal in 2017 along with Marlon Marie. On another note, Fencing was highlighted by the Dominica Olympic Committee (DOC) during the inaugural week of The Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees (CANOC) which was held from March 4 – 10, 2018. The DMFA introduced the sport of Fencing at four local schools; namely The Dominica Grammar School, Pioneer Preparatory School, Canefield/Massacre Primary School and the Dublanc/Bioche Primary School. The sessions were conducted by President of the DMFA Woody Lawrence OLY and assisted by Senior National Female Fencer Andrea Bruno. To date the membership is currently nearing 30 Fencers. Since the recommencement of the program following the devastation of Hurricane Maria, membership has increased tremendously.
