Mahira Jno-Baptiste, Dominica’s 2019 Miss Wob, intends to change the perception of unpopularity associated with the title.
Jno-Baptiste told the local news outlet, Dominicanewsonline, that the Miss Wob Pageant hardly gets any recognition but she intends on changing that trend. “During my reign, I would like to do at least two projects. The first being to invest in a children’s group and young adult cultural group”, she said. The other project according to her is to get involved in exercise and local cuisine. “I also want to facilitate the teaching of cultural dances and playing of traditional instruments…the goal would be toward their performance at the 2020 independence competitions…”, she added. According to Jno-Baptiste, if young people are given a chance, “they can shine”, because what they really need is “to be guided in the right direction”. The Miss Wob 2019 also believes there is a decline in some aspects of Dominica’s culture. “During cultural competitions, venues are empty because people have attended political rallies or other entertainment events and also mentioned the bad attitudes some Dominicans share towards each other,” she stated. On a more personal note, Ms Jno-Baptiste revealed some major plans for her future. She said she intends to study medicine. “I intend on becoming a doctor with [a] special focus either in sports, medicine or pathology. One thing should be clear though, anything I decide my country will be in my heart.” In addition to her future educational endeavors, Jno Baptiste said she would also like to continue playing the steel pan, learn to play the instruments of the jing ping band and maybe one day participate in the national queen show.
