National Epidemiologist Dr. Shalauddin Ahmed, on Monday updated the public on disease surveillance and outbreaks in Dominica. He explained that the country currently uses an indicative surveillance system, which tracks disease activity weekly through reports from healthcare facilities across the island. Dr. Ahmed also highlighted a recent development supported by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). The Ministry of Health has successfully piloted an electronic reporting tool on the district health information system platform. This new tool aims to enhance early warning capabilities and expand the scope of information available within the system. Dr. Ahmed also gave an update on communicable diseases, including the COVID-19 virus. He noted a slight increase in cases during August and March of this year. Dr. Ahmed emphasized that the virus is likely to continue evolving into new variants, which underscores the need for individuals to maintain robust immune systems.
