New Dominica Council of Ageing (DCOA) President Gloria Shillingford calls for better care of elderly9/5/2017 New Dominica Council of Ageing (DCOA) President Gloria Shillingford has called for better care of elderly. She was addressing DCOA’s Executive Inauguration held on Saturday 2nd September 2017, at the Fort Young Hotel in Roseau, where she noted that elderly people are everywhere, at the doctor’s office, clinics, churches, schools, businesses, on the streets and in the communities at large; and it should be the responsibility of the general public to take care of them, regardless of their situation, or the circumstance in which they may find themselves.
She added that the world’s population is aging, and by 2030, the world will have over two billion elderly people, and that is the reason she is calling on everyone to embrace and love the elderly, while showing them gratitude and respect. She said they have paid their dues, by building our country and making us who we are today. Shillingford stated that elderly people sometimes become victims of abuse and discrimination, and noted that the DCOA remains committed to eradicating all abuse of the elderly. She said, “The DCOA sees its role as one of advocacy on behalf of the unfortunate members among us, with the ultimate goal of eradicating such actions in our society”. Members of the New DCOA Executive are: President Gloria Shillingford 1st Vice President Evander Joseph 2nd Vice President Nigel Lawrence Secretary Nicholas George Treasurer Cecil Joseph Asst Secretary Treasurer Lennox St Aimee Supernumerary Member Einsworth Irish, Ophelia Marie & Robertson Seaman The Youth Arm of the DCOA, which consists of 22 members, was also launched at the ceremony.
