ODM continuing to monitor the movement of Hurricane Irma heading towards the Lesser Antilles9/1/2017 The office of disaster management is continuing to monitor the movement of Hurricane Irma, heading towards the Lesser Antilles. At present Hurricane Irma is expected in the Central and or Northern portion of the island chain late Tuesday into Wednesday next week, this includes Dominica. Irma is expected to strengthen to a major hurricane by that time, making it an extremely dangerous Atlantic hurricane. The hurricane is some six (6) days away from the islands, and although there are uncertainties about its projections, all residents are warned to complete all preparations and continue to closely monitor the Irma’s progress, as the impacts could be catastrophic. Meanwhile, weak unstable conditions due to the presence of a tropical wave and a weak trough, are expected to result in occasional cloudiness and scattered showers across the island chain during the next 24 hours. At 5am, category three Hurricane Irma was located near latitude 18.2 degrees north and longitude 36.5 degrees west or about 1650 miles east of the Lesser Antilles and moving west north west near 12mph with maximum sustained winds near 115 mph. The center of the system is projected to move just northeast of the area by Tuesday into Wednesday next week. Dominicans are advised to monitor the progress of this system, and to make all the necessary preparations, as Irma continues to move towards the Lesser Antilles. Slight to moderate seas are expected during the next 24 to 48 hours with waves peaking near 5 feet.
