According to the Health Information Unit, Ministry of Health & Environment in Dominica: Mr. TG, 69-year-old male from Massacre, was brought in to the Princess Margaret Hospital after being found unresponsive at home on 2nd October 2017. During admission, he was hypoglycemic and icteric. About a week prior to this admission, on 27th September, he was admitted in the ward with a history of chest pain, generalized body pain, and body swelling. His chest X-ray showed marked cardiomegaly and bilateral pulmonary edema. He also had mild temperature (100°F) and jaundice, then. The patient had a history of CCF (Congestive cardiac failure). The working diagnosis during admission was ‘probable leptospirosis’. The Patient was allegedly put on doxycycline and cefotaxime. A Sample was taken for leptospirosis on October 5th 2017. The Patient died on October 8th 2017. The result from the test of the sample was received on 9th November, confirming Hantavirus through IgM antibody Titre, but not leptospirosis. Hantavirus was first discovered by Karl Johnson and Ho-Wang Lee in the 1970’s and was named for the Hantan River area in South Korea, where an early outbreak was observed. Although similar to leptospirosis, it is a different virus.
