Opposition Leader Lennox Linton accuses President Savarin of making prejudicial statements about UWP4/10/2017 Charles Savarin of having made what he calls prejudicial statements toward the UWP, in his address to the nation on the 7th February unrest. The Opposition United Workers Party along with the Dominica Freedom Party, conducted a peaceful protest On February 7, calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit and his cabinet. Several hours after the peaceful protest had ended, violence erupted in the capital city, resulting in loss and damage to several business enterprises. According to Linton, the president’s address failed to mention the significant issues plaguing the country, but paid detailed attention to the Party’s extremely Peaceful Meeting which ended without incident. The UWP leader says his party believes the President’s statement was made in a deliberate effort to portray the UWP as being responsible for the unrest which occurred on the night of 7th February 2017. Meanwhile, Linton has responded to His Excellency President Charles Savarin’s response to his previous letter seeking urgent action by the president to aid in the restoration of Dominica’s image in the international community.
In Savarin’s response, he challenged the Opposition Leader to provide the grounds by which he should perform the actions proposed by the Opposition. In response, Linton reminded Savarin of his key role in the events leading up to the removal of Former Prime Minster Patrick John in 1979. He went on to say, in light of worsening circumstances, there is nothing in Dominica’s constitution which prevents the president from requesting the immediate resignation of Prime Minister.
