Opposition UWP looking forward to make its eight (8th) Shipment of local farm produce to Martinique3/15/2017 Opposition UWP says it is looking forward to making its eight (8th) Shipment of local farm produce to Martinique. The UWP has kept a promise it made during the last general election to seek ways of revitalizing the agricultural sector in Dominica.
UWP Senator Dr. Thomson Fontaine said the party penetrated the Martinique market in December 2016, and shipped over 21 different types of produce to that French country, including yams, tania, ginger, turmeric, seasoning pepper, pumpkin, dasheen, toloma, farine, spice, christophine and grapefruits among other things. Dr Fontaine says farmers across the island have already participated in, and benefited from, seven shipments of produce that have already been made, and his team is already working on its eighth (8th) shipment. Fontaine said during the past two months, over 30 tons of produce were shipped to Martinique, and put some $150,000 directly into the hands of Dominican farmers. Fontaine stated that the produce is being shipped twice a month based on the availability of the ‘The Henlee’, which is vessel being used. He said the UWP hopes to begin exporting to the Barbados market, in the next few months.
