Businesses and residents have been experiencing a spate of burglaries in the Roseau area and elsewhere for some time. However, during the months of July and August 2017, these activities appeared to have sharply increased. Police have now arrested and charged Newtown resident Mitchel “Fabou” Bernard Phillip for a number of burglaries in Roseau from 22nd July to 15th August 2017.
Phillip appeared before a Magistrate in Roseau on 24th August 2017, where the charges were read to him. He was not required to plea, as all of the matters are indictable. Phillip was charged with burglarizing Kent Anthony’s Guest House between 22nd and 24th July 2017. He allegedly stole a battery charger, pants, T-shirts and other items totaling EC$920. He was also charged with burglarizing and stealing a number of items totaling EC$325 from the business premises of Nicks Trading on August 9, 2017; as well as burglary of Kendell Mini Mart at 8 Hanover Street in Roseau on August 14, 2017. He allegedly stole several items including a laptop and whiskey, among other things, totaling EC$2,534.50. Another burglary for which he was charged, allegedly took place on August 15, 2017, at Josh Boutique, where he is said to have stolen a laptop, perfumes, clothing & other things totaling to EC$26,082.80 Phillip has a history of convictions including theft in 2011, handling stolen goods in 2011, and theft in 2017. Phillip was not represented by counsel. He was not granted bail, and the matter is set for trial on 27th November 2017.
