PPOD Leader Sapphire Carrington is pleased with the soft loan facility set up at the AID Bank for farmers, manufacturers, and those engaged in the tourism sector. According to Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, the loans will be easier to access by those involved in these sectors, and will help the private sector to grow, after the ravages of Hurricane Maria. EC $35 million is now available at the AID Bank at 2% interest. Carrington says however, the soft loan facility should have been provided at a 0% interest rate, to effectively assist in the Private Sector’s development for a limited time. According to the Prime Minister, the new facility is now available as of 11th December 2017. Meantime, Carrington demands that Government protect the citizens of Dominica from certain Employers who may have breached the law, post Hurricane Maria. On 8th December 2017, Dominica’s Labour Commissioner Dr Mathew Leblanc said “In many cases, we realize employers are using the pretext of the devastation brought by Hurricane Maria, not only to relieve themselves of certain workers, or to sever the employment relationship that has been established with certain workers, but do it in a manner that is not consistent with the law.” Leblanc said this is wrong and should not be practiced. Sapphire says if this is being practiced by certain employers, the government has a duty to ensure that citizens are legally protected.
