Former Minister of Agriculture, and Owner of Exotica Cottages, Atherton Martin, reveals what the cause was for the apprehension and premature departure of seven wealthy American tourists who came to Dominica for leisure in response to an invitation from Aviator Mr. Brian Lloyd with the knowledge of a senior Port Officer.The seven visitors came to Dominica on three private planes and landed at the Canefield Airport. Mr. Martin revealed that they had been cleared by immigration and customs. After which the visitors were brought to Exotica Cottages to begin their ‘Nature Isle Experience’ - However police suddenly stormed Exotica Cottages to detain the visitors, claiming that they needed to investigate their immigration status. Based on international law, anybody flying an aircraft along with the pilot is considered crew and in that instance it is left to the discretion of immigration officers to stamp or just validate the passport of crew members. Martin explained that the seven Americans presented all their passport documents to immigration as customary, and after review all seven visitors were allowed to leave the Airport and enter Dominica.The Americans, who were supposed to leave on Wednesday March 27, were forced to leave Dominica on March 25, 2024. Since then, the public has raised concern with the Police about this matter.Martin further explained the arrival of the Americans were the start of a new tourism project, involving Aviators with wealthy clients looking for destinations to visit throughout the year. In a recent release, the World Health Organization (WHO) highlighted the heightened risk of abuse faced by older women and women with disabilities, a plight often overlooked in global and national violence-related data. The health agency emphasized the urgent need for enhanced research across countries to accurately capture these women's experiences and address their specific needs.
Recent publications by WHO underscored the scarcity of data on gender-based violence among older women and women with disabilities, despite evidence indicating a high prevalence of such abuse. One systematic review revealed increased risks of intimate partner violence and sexual violence among women with disabilities compared to their counterparts without disabilities. Technical Officer at WHO and the UN Special Programme on Human Reproduction (HRP) for Violence against Women Data and Measurement, stressed the importance of understanding the diverse impacts of violence on women and girls. She emphasized that such understanding is crucial for tailoring effective programs and services to meet their unique needs. Intimate partner violence and sexual violence remain pervasive globally, affecting approximately 1 in 3 women. However, older women & women with disabilities are not exempt from these forms of abuse. They highlighted their intention to share the knowledge gained with their respective NGOs to integrate it into their operations and projects in Dominica. As participant-observers during the GAYAP experience, the Dominicans and other attendees assisted communities in creating fire breaks, clearing fire lines, and pathways to mitigate the occurrence of bush and forest fires. Project Manager, Dr Jermaine Jewel Jean-Pierre claims that Dominica’s Digital Transformation Project continues to take root into the operations of business and into the lives of Dominicans. The project which is supported by the OECS and has regional components, came about in 2020 where the government of Dominica took a loan from the World Bank to fund the Digital Transformation Project. While speaking to local media recently, Project Manager, Dr Jermaine Jewel Jean-Pierre, expounded on the purpose for the government’s investments into this project and its vision. The training component of the program has been going well, Jean-Pierre adds that 16 innovation hubs are open around Dominica, offering training to business personnel and consumers on digital related software, at no cost to them. The Dominica State College held its Career fair on March 22, 2024. 32 businesses participated in the event, solidifying its success. Construction of the Dominica Cable Car project which commenced in January 2021 is said to be progressing smoothly; that’s according to Manager of the project, Mr Randy Gleige. According to officials this Cable Car Project is touted to have the world’s longest cable route, with an expected completion date of December 2025. The Cable car will traverse and showcase many of the sites within the Roseau Valley area and will get up to the Boiling Lake in minutes. Currently, 200 Dominicans are employed on this project. Chamberlain Emmanuel, Head of the Environmental and Sustainability Division at the OECS Commission, has revealed that the inception of the Regional Environmental Monitoring Data Portal (REMDAP) traces back to a feasibility study conducted in 2020. Following thorough national stakeholder consultations involving 8 IW eco-countries, REMDAP was identified as a crucial regional initiative. Emmanuel highlighted that in December 2022, the project's development received additional support through contracted consultation services to ensure its continued advancement. Emmanuel elaborated that the portal underwent development and extensive testing across multiple countries. Moreover, relevant stakeholders received training sessions on utilizing and overseeing the platform, which is interconnected with both national and regional data repositories.
