Principal of Orion Academy Queen Thomas terminated Just weeks before students face CXC exams in May3/22/2017 Just weeks before students face CXC Exams in May, Principal of Orion Academy, Queen Thomas, has been terminated by the Chairman of the Board of Directors without a replacement, as the results of investigations into an alleged theft by a student surfaced. In a press conference on Tuesday, Principal Thomas alleged that recent investigations revealed the Chairman may be sympathetic to someone who may know something about that theft; and soon after the results of the investigation came to light, she was handed her dismissal papers. She is calling on the Orion Academy Board Chairman, to excuse himself from the board, in order for the matter to be discussed impartially. Thomas says it is a regrettable situation, however the actions of the chairman have opened the school to litigation, and she intends to take further action against the school, for breach of her contract. Q95 has not been able to independently verify the factual correctness of any of the claims made in in this story. However, we will make every effort to reach the Orion Academy Board Chairman, in order to bring you the other side of the story in a subsequent newscast.
Meanwhile, a group of parents, whose children are attending the Orion Academy, want the Chairman of the Board of Directors to recuse himself, in the face of an ongoing situation at that learning institution. This decision by the parents follows the Boards’ decision to terminate the Principal’s contract. Vincia Auguiste, the mother of a first form student, said in recent times, the school has seen an increase in alleged criminal activity, including theft. She lamented the termination of the Principal without arrangements being made for a replacement. She said the parents are very concerned with the timing of the termination, as fifth form students are one week away from commencing CXC mock examinations. Hilda Johnson, whose son is a fifth former, agreed that “the situation is regrettable and unfavourable, due to an unfortunate incident. In all such situations, the welfare of the students is of the utmost importance. This is so because students in fifth form will soon be sitting the CXC examinations, thus as a parent, I believe whatever decision is taken, the students’ welfare must be given priority,”. Another parent indicated that Board Chairman Justin Kase sent an email to the parent body informing them that Thomas’ employment has been terminated, and she therefore “cannot conduct business on behalf of the school, and is no longer a representative of the school”. That parent replied to the Chairman’s email seeking clarification on the matter, but received was no response. The group of parents have therefore decided to “force the hand” of the Board of Directors, by writing to request an urgent meeting to resolve the matter. Q95 will continue to make every effort to contact the Orion Board Chairman, to get his side of the story.
