Should PM Skerrit have tabled Electoral Law amendment in Parliament without prior consultations?5/29/2017 Should Prime Minister Skerrit have tabled amendments to Dominica’s Electoral Laws in Parliament, without prior widespread consultations? That question seems to be on the mind of Dominicans at home & abroad.
The Opposition UWP has welcomed a decision of the DLP Government to defer consideration of the Bills to amend the Electoral laws in Dominica pending review and further consultation. Prime Minister Skerrit made the announcement on Thursday afternoon, stating that it was in an effort to avoid confrontation which others are seeking. This, after persons engaged in protest action outside of the house of Parliament on Tuesday in relation to that matter. Addressing a UWP press briefing on Friday afternoon, Linton, UWP Leader Lennox Linton said this is the course of action that they recommended to PM Skerrit by letter, after receiving notice of Government's intention to enact the proposed amendments. He said, if the Prime Minister’s statements about modern parliamentary procedure were sincere, as regards to changes to law, the proposed amendments would not have been brought to parliament without prior widespread consultations.
