Six-year-old student at Calibishie Primary School, Ava Liburd, has been awarded the Team Unity Lifetime Academic Scholarship (TULAS), valued at an impressive one million dollars (XCD $1,000,000.00).
The scholarship is administered by the H.O.P.E. (Helping Ordinary People Everywhere) organization, with the first disbursement made during the 2024 school year. The official presentation took place on Tuesday, September 10, 2024. TULAS, which launched during a historic event in Calibishie on August 12, 2022, is a one-time offer aimed at supporting students throughout their academic journey. The scholarship amount was determined based on the total cost of schooling for the duration of the recipient’s academic life. To maintain the award, Ava must uphold a positive grade-point average and actively participate in social and community activities, volunteering her time for developmental causes. This scholarship is awarded based on demonstrated financial need and academic merit, with family support also taken into account. It is important to note that the award is non-transferable and not influenced by political affiliations, as Team Unity (TUD) did not directly participate in selecting the recipient. The selection process was guided by staff members of the Calibishie Government School, reflecting a partnership among Team Unity, the H.O.P.E. organization, the local school, residents of Calibishie, and the broader Dominican community.
