The United Workers Party’s (UWP) National Council has once again refused to accept the resignation of its political leader, Allen Chastanet. The decision was announced in a press release issued on December 8, following a council meeting held to address recent political developments, including Chastanet’s renewed offer to step down.
According to the release, the council—described as the party’s highest decision-making body—reached a “clear and unanimous decision” to retain him as leader until the next party convention. This marks the second time in four years that the UWP has declined Chastanet’s resignation. His first attempt occurred in 2021, after the Saint Lucia Labour Party won the general election. The latest offer came shortly after the UWP’s defeat in the December 1 general election, where the party won just one of the 17 seats contested, intensifying calls for new leadership. In the statement, Public Relations Officer Leonard “Spider” Montoute emphasized the party’s focus on stability, renewal, and continued public service. The UWP expressed appreciation for the ongoing support of its members and pledged to strengthen the organization as it moves forward.
