As part of its mandate to ensure a reliable and adequate electricity supply, the Independent Regulatory Commission (IRC) in Dominica says it began conducting site visits to assess several key electricity generation projects that are vital to meeting the island’s growing energy demand while reducing reliance on fossil fuels for electricity production.
The IRC has been consulting on DOMLEC operations for some time, and now says it is assessing electricity generation projects, but Dominicans continue to wonder whether electricity rates will increase or decrease? Among the projects being evaluated are: - A 4.8-Megawatt Thermal Leased Generator at DOMLEC’s Fond Cole Plant, which is set to be commissioned by the end of February 2025. This generator will provide an immediate boost to the island's power generation capacity. - A 6-Megawatt Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)** located at Fond Cole, near the existing thermal station. This system will aid in the integration of the 10MW Roseau Valley geothermal plant into the national grid and maintain system stability in case of outages from other energy sources, among others. The IRC says these initiatives are aligned with the Government of Dominica's goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030, aiming for 100% of the country’s electricity to come from domestic renewable sources in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
