The Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Commission has officially launched the Resilient Ecosystems through Mangrove Restoration (REMAR) Project, a five-year initiative aimed at bolstering climate resilience and biodiversity.
In partnership with the Agence Française de Développement and the French Facility for Global Environment, the €5.5 million project will focus on restoration and long-term ecosystem management across five territories: Grenada, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Martinique, and Guadeloupe. The project seeks to address the critical decline of mangrove habitats, which provide essential services such as shoreline protection, carbon sequestration, and support for regional fisheries. During the virtual launch ceremony, OECS Director General Dr. Didacus Jules characterized the restoration of mangroves as a necessary developmental requirement rather than just an environmental preference. He explained that the REMAR project serves as a collaborative model that prioritizes local ownership and strategic partnerships, positioning the OECS as a proactive leader in regional solutions. Dr. Jules further noted that the initiative is designed to improve the quality of life for citizens throughout the region by utilizing collective action to mitigate the impacts of climate change, storm surges, and sargassum inundation.
