The second anniversary of Hurricane Maria is to be made a public holiday, says the government of Dominica. Thursday September 2019 is considered to be a time for reflection for the citizens of Dominica. This is according to an official face book post from Dominica’s prime minister Roosevelt Skerrit.
The post reads:“Good Afternoon Everyone, It is official. Thursday, September 19, 2019 will be a full public holiday. I want it to be a day of reflection for all Dominicans, as we celebrate how far this country has come after the passage of Hurricane Maria.” Two hours before this announcement, the prime minister also posted the following: “Dominica is recovering and developing far quicker than many people expected, after we were battered by Hurricane Maria two years ago. While the hard work isn't over, we must give thanks to the Lord for preserving our lives and granting the strength some of us didn't know we had, to begin rebuilding 98% of this country. Block by block, screw by screw and seed by seed, we have successfully started the process of building a Dominica that surpasses what our forefathers dreamed of and prayed for. Thursday, September 19th will be a public holiday and I am calling on every one to join hands in solidarity at the Windsor Park Stadium as we reflect not just on what we went through, but also celebrate how far we have come”
