Thirteen Dominican Students awarded scholarships to pursue studies in Cuba on Wednesday June 216/22/2017 Photo: Dominica News Online Thirteen Dominican Students were awarded scholarships to pursue undergraduate, higher education and post graduate studies in Cuba, on Wednesday 21st June 2017, at the Cuban Embassy at Morne Daniel. The Government of Cuba, and the Ministry of Health collaborated to provide full scholarships for university level studies in the Spanish speaking Caribbean Island.
Tabitha Baron, Dellaria Bobb, Kelda David, Ray Joseph, Sue-Elyn Myers, and Zillia Williams received scholarships to pursue undergraduate studies in medicine; Dr. Warren Allister and Dr. Seannel David received scholarships for post graduate medical studies. In health technology, Patrick Chamber will study medical and radio-physics, and Shakeem Durand will pursue pharmaceutical studies. Narcissus Benjamin will study civil engineering; Cleopatra Christopher will study chemical engineering; and Marlon Moses will pursue mechanical engineering studies. Cuban Ambassador to Dominica Juan Carlos Frometa de la Rosa said it is an honour for Cuba to have this scholarship programme with Dominica, which is now in its thirty-ninth year. The Ambassador said what Cuba and Dominica have been doing is important, as it goes towards building a “better Dominica”. He told the students, “Take the opportunity, and enjoy it, and then come back to Dominica”. Health Minister Kenneth Darroux told the awardees, these scholarships are the “opportunity of a lifetime.” Darroux expressed his gratitude to Cuba’s Ambassador to Dominica, Juan Carlos Frometa de la Rosa. He said, “On behalf of all of us, the families, the parents, and of course myself as a Dominican, we want to thank the Cuban government for continuing to assist us, especially in the areas of education and health”. Education Minister Petter St Jean also thanked the Cuban government, and challenged the students to responsibility handle any difficulties or fun times that they might face, and that they should constantly reminded themselves of the purpose of their presence in Cuba.
