Tourism Minister Robert Tonge describes claims of Dominica’s Tourism being ineffective, as “Fake News” Speaking at a Town Hall Meeting in Wotten Waven this week, the Tourism Minister said the Government has changed the rules and regulations for the sector. However, he claims that the challenge lies with those who continue to misrepresent Dominica in the industry. He called on citizens to help improve the industry, in order to attract more visitors to the island. Meanwhile, Tonge has announced that there will be a significant increase in the number of ships intended to visit the Dominica during summer 2017. The Tourism Minister announced an improvement in Dominica’s scores on visitor satisfaction with the destination.
In 2015, Dominica received some very low scores, in a 95-page report of a survey conducted by the Business Research & Economic Advisors (BREA), on behalf of the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association, for the 2014-2015 cruise season. In that survey, many indicated they would not recommend a land-based or resort vacation on the island to family or friends, and would not return to the island in the next three years. Tonge says during this year’s cruise season, Dominica can expect two hundred and twenty-five (225) ships, bringing four hundred and twenty-two thousand (422,000) visitors to the small island – a marked improvement from last year’s season, according to Tonge.
