UNICEF Representative in Dominica Antonio Andres is calling for proper management of water tanks now that many persons within the various communities are installing water tanks for water consumption, particularly for domestic use. Andres says the tanks are of significance particularly when it rains heavily and the water becomes turbid, however; he says these tanks must be managed properly so that they do not become a problem that impacts people's health. The Ministry of Health says following the hurricane there's been an increased risk of re-emergence of communicable diseases, such as water and food borne diseases including acute respiratory conditions, gastro-enteritis due to poor sanitation and food safety. Also mosquito borne diseases such as dengue, zika, chikungunya and leptospirosis. Also, with an increase in rainfall turbid water may return to the taps making it unsafe for drinking due to the provisional status of DOWASCO repairs to water catchment areas. Andres says UNICEF's mandate is to improve the conditions of children and the country at large and to also work with the WASH team at ensuring proper water and sanitation in schools and shelters.
