Marigot MP and Leader of the United Workers Party Lennox Linton is calling on the authorities in the Agriculture Ministry to review their approach to distribution of the World Bank Emergency Cash grant to farmers. Recently, Agriculture Minister Johnson Drigo announced that some 3,932 qualified farmers who were affected by Hurricane Maria, would benefit from an Agricultural Emergency Response Grant. A contract was signed with the Dominica Agricultural Industrial & Development Bank (AID Bank) on Thursday 18th January 2018, which administered the grant to the farmers on behalf of the government. Nine hundred commercial farmers will receive EC$10,000 each and 3,032 farmers will receive EC $3,000 each, from the World Bank-funded program. Drigo, described the grant as a “short-term mobilization response to the negative impact of Hurricane Maria to the farming community.” Linton says the initiative is good, however, farmers in the North East of Dominica are not pleased with the distribution process initiated by the Ministry.
