According to a press release from the United Workers Party (UWP), the political persecution of the Parliamentary Opposition is continuing unabated, with the arrest of former Senator Claudius Sanford, at 5am Wednesday 15th February 2017.
The attempted intimidating arrests follow a peaceful public meeting held on 7th February 2017, where a large portion of the Dominican population supported the call of the Opposition UWP and DFP, for the Resignation of the Skerrit led administration. Since then, party members became the target of arrests by police. The emphatic call for Prime Minister Skerrit’s resignation arose in part, as a consequence of the recent arrests of Dominican Economic citizen Alie Reza Monfared of Iranian birth, on charges of participating in the illegal sale of US2.8 billion of Iranian oil, at a time when Iran had been placed under economic sanctions by the United Nations Security Council and the United States of America. Mr. Monfared allegedly conducted his nefarious activities out of Malaysia through his registered companies ‘My Dominica Trade House dot com’ and ‘Dominica One’. These sanctions busting activities by Mr. Monfared are said to have seriously undermined Dominica’s standing in the Global community, and jeopardized the global Security Architecture, while he remained the holder of a Diplomatic passport issued by the Government of Dominica, led by Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit. For these and other reasons, the United Workers Party says unequivocally, that Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has lost his Moral authority to govern Dominica, and stands by its call for his resignation, and also call for an end to the political persecution of the members of the United Workers Party.
