Education Ministry announces a zero tolerance policy on child sexual abuse at homes and schools2/17/2016 The Ministry of Education says it has a zero tolerance policy on child sexual abuse whether it is at the homes or in the school system. And Chief Education Officer Melina Fontaine says the Ministry ensures that necessary action is taken to deal with all reported cases of child abuse. Meanwhile, teachers across the island are being trained in alternative disciplinary practices under the Child Friendly Schools Initiative Program. The program which was launched September 2009 focuses on behaviour management practices in classrooms; the creation of classrooms that are learning ready, healthy lifestyles and systems that encourage the participation of all children. Melina Fontaine says although corporal punishment is still part of the country’s education act it should only be used as a last resort. Chief Education Officer Melina Fontaine
