Former IMF Economist Dr. Thompson Fontaine believes that the process by which the Government lent money to farmers to rear pigs for the abattoir, is flawed.
Fontaine says after conducting his research across the island, he discovered that farmers are complaining about the structure put in place by the Government, to rear and sell pigs to the National Abattoir.
According to the economist, the main concern of the farmers’ center around the issue of revenue, in that their expenditure exceeds the income made from selling the pigs to the abattoir.
Dr. Fontaine added that the Government should have bundled the cost of production, and allowed the Pig farmers to pay a certain amount after 6 months, toward the repayment of their loan.
