The Government of Dominica says it will this year continue the traditional Christmas barrel initiative. People who are collecting barrels at the port, will pay only $10 from 1st December to 10th January 2017.
Executive Director of the Dominica Air & Sea Ports Authority (DASPA), Benoit Bardouille, said this applies only to personal items, and not to commercial items.
He says “First and foremost, there is a household limit. During the implementation period, each household in Dominica shall be entitled to a maximum of two barrels, boxes or crates or cartoons or equivalent size to a regular barrel will also be eligible,” he said. “The definition of the barrel shall mean basically non-commercial packages received… such as boxes, barrels, crates and up to upper limit of $1,500 on the value of these items will qualify for concession.”
He continued “Persons clearing a barrel which was imported between 1st December 2016 and 10th January 2017, will pay EC$10 as a recipient of that concession...the recipient shall also be exempt from import duty and custom service charges on the eligible barrels.”
