Herbert Xavier pleads guilty to manslaughter; state withdraws charges against his sisters, Manuella and Loretta
Charges have been withdrawn against his sisters Manuella Williams and Lauretta Xavier, while Herbert Xavier of Soufriere has pleaded guilty to manslaughter. All three appeared in court this morning, Tuesday 1st March 2016.
They were originally found guilty of killing their brother Harrison Williams in 2010, and sent to prison for 15 years.
They subsequently appealed the conviction, and the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (ECSC) held that “major errors” were made during the trial by Judge Brian Cottle.
Their conviction was overturned by the ECSC in November 2014, and they were granted bail in the sum of EC$250,000 each with sureties. The Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (ECSC) also ordered a retrial.
In February 2016, the state withdrew the murder charge and replaced it with manslaughter.
