President of the Dominica Manufacturers Association (DMA), Severin McKenzie, says the lack of mass packaging material on island, is creating a problem for small scale manufacturers. McKenzie says given the scale at which these manufacturers are producing, packaging material must be purchased individually on the local market affecting the cost price for the goods. McKenzie says presently most manufacturers, and particularly those involved in cottage industries, are utilizing their household kitchens to process their products.
He noted however, that a project will soon be coming on stream, to establish a centre for agro processers to produce their goods for sale. That project is being implemented by the DMA, in collaboration with DEXIA, NDFD and the Bureau of Standards.
