Notwithstanding reports of violence, a police overview of the 2016 Carnival activities observed in Portsmouth, Salisbury, St. Joseph, Mahaut, Roseau and Grand Bay, reports a relatively peaceful carnival.
Sergeant Pelham JnoBaptiste reported a few minor incidents after the festivities in St Joseph; two serious incidents of wounding were reported; and a serious traffic accident which left a 3-year-old injured in Grand bay.
However, the majority of incidents occurred in Roseau, with 23 arrests mostly for minor offences of ‘armed with an offensive weapon’ and ‘disorderly conduct’; and two incidents of ‘wounding’ where a police officer and a young man sustained serious injuries. While another police officer also sustained injuries while on duty in Roseau.
JnoBaptiste stated that the police condemn every act of violence in the state, however commended citizens for improvement in their behaviour during the 2016 Carnival celebrations.
