Dominica’s Cocoa has attracted the attention of a three-member team from University of the West Indies (Trinidad) St. Augustine Campus, who intend to conduct surveys involving over fifty (50) cocoa farms, during the week of October 10 to 14.
Researcher Lambert Motilal of the UWI St. Augustine Campus is of the view that Dominica has the potential to be a top Cocoa producing island like Grenada.
He says the end result of these surveys will to determine the genetic diversity of Dominica, in order to verify future breeding programs.
This project costing over EC$100.000.00 is a NOA European Union funded/Ministry of Agriculture initiative. These surveys will be undertaken on farms within the seven agricultural regions, and will assist the Ministry of Agriculture in establishing a database of all cocoa varieties found in Dominica.
