Zika is at it again. Already linked to numerous neurological conditions such as Microcephaly – a condition in which the brain does not develop properly resulting in a smaller than normal head, Zika has once more been linked to another rare but dangerous condition, Guillain Barré syndrome. Guillain Barré Syndrome is the rapid onset of muscle weakness beginning in the feet and hands, developing over a period of time. The disorder is caused by the immune system attacking the peripheral nervous system. During the acute phase, the disorder can be life-threatening as some patients develop weakness of the breathing muscles and requiring mechanical ventilation.
