Jamaica’s Minister of State in the Ministry of National Security Rudyard Spencer has called on members of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to collaborate more in the fight against corruption at ports in the region.
Addressing the CARICOM Chiefs of Immigration and Comptrollers of Customs Conference, Spencer said it is through continuous collaboration that “we will defeat crime at our regional borders”. “Many of us are confronting issues we have never had to grapple with before at a rapid pace that demands partnership. In the face of porous borders, shifting criminal and terrorist threats, it is indeed true that no man is literally an island and no man or country succeeds alone,” he said. The State Minister said that in this age of terrorism, cybercrime and organised criminal networks, CARICOM continues to face rising levels of crime. Ukraine staged the murder of a Russian dissident journalist in Kiev on Tuesday in what it said was a sting operation to foil a Russian assassination plot.
Arkady Babchenko sent shock waves around the world when he arrived at a news conference on Wednesday, less than 24 hours after he was reported dead. The head of Ukraine's security services, Vasyl Hrytsak, said the elaborate sting was set up to catch hitmen paid by Russian forces. Police said they had made one arrest. Babchenko's wife said on Tuesday that she found him at the entrance to their apartment block with bullet wounds in his back, and he was reported to have died in an ambulance on the way to hospital. That story was widely reported by press around the world, until Wednesday's sudden and extraordinary development. There were gasps and applause at the press conference in Kiev, as Babchenko entered the room. He thanked the Ukrainian security services for saving his life and said he had no choice but to take part in the sting. He said, "I did my job. I'm still alive. I have buried many friends and colleagues many times, and I know the sickening feeling. I am sorry you had to experience it. But there was no other way." Battle brewing between two Labour Party potential Roseau Central candidates for the next election5/30/2018 A Battle is Brewing between two Dominica Labour Party potential Roseau Central candidates for the next general election. The fight will be between new-comer Joseph Isaac, the current Parliamentary Representative who recently crossed the floor to join the DLP, and three-year Senator Robbie Tonge. Isaac recently deserted the opposition United Workers Party (UWP) on whose platform he became the parliamentary representative, and got a Ministry in the Labour government.
Asked last week whether he will be the Roseau Central candidate for the DLP in the upcoming general elections, Isaac replied: "I know the answer to that but for now, I don't want to talk about it…my focus is for Dominica and the Roseau people. I know the answer but don't want to divulge it." In response to a similar question, Tonge, who was the presumptive candidate before Isaac crossed the floor said: "The DLP Roseau Central executive is the one armed with selecting a candidate. That process has not yet started, but Isaac and I are working hand in hand in the constituency doing our work; it's a team matter and not about Isaac or Robbie, it's about the party." Isaac says he has not become a member of the DLP although his "independent candidate" posturing has inevitably faded. Additionally, he seems to suggest that he expects to be the DLP candidate for Roseau Central. When asked if he has joined the DLP Isaac answered: "I am inclined but for now I don't want people to preempt my move…a number of them have moved with me…I feel honoured that the people feel I have that contribution to make; I am focused". He added: "The people are calling for it, lots of UWP supporters have moved with me and Labour supporters who voted against me in the last election are happy and excited about the move. I am also, but I will remain focused with the task ahead. It's exciting. Remember it's one Dominica and so all of us have to come on board…I am just an instrument of God." Former DFP Deputy Leader Dr Sam Christian may contest the Soufriere Constituency as a UWP candidate5/30/2018 Former DFP Deputy Leader Dr Sam Christian may contest the Soufriere constituency as a UWP candidate. At a recent meeting at the home of a former UWP Soufriere constituency candidate, party branch members voted overwhelmingly for Dr Christian to be the UWP candidate. Dr Christian however has neither confirmed nor denied that he will be the next UWP candidate in the Soufriere constituency.
He admitted that he was part of a UWP meeting in Pointe Michel where certain decisions were taken to endorse him as the UWP candidate for that constituency. Dr. Christian said "I am aware of the meeting and what was said and discussed, but another meeting will be held and we will discuss that further…for now it is somewhat out of my hands since the people have the final say. For now, I am on the ground as usual and further concentrating on my medical practice". Dr Christian did not reveal whether he is still a member of the DFP, or that he stepped down from the DFP executive because he had a difference of opinion from the team. However, he says he is still a Freedomite, and that he talks to Laborites and Worker-rites, and so together, all of us can do something to move our country forward. DFP Chairman Johnson Boston says the NEP is not a sustainable solution for high unemployment5/30/2018 Chairman of the DFP Johnson Boston has warned that the NEP program must not be seen as a permanent solution to curb high unemployment in Dominica. Boston says the National Employment Program (NEP) itself is OK, however he is disappointed that the DLP government has piggy backed on this temporal fix for so long, rather than develop the economy. Meantime, Boston is urging Government authorities to begin assisting the Marigot constituency in a genuine fashion. Boston says too many times, whenever donations or aid is given to constituencies dominated by the members of opposition political parties, it is done in a very disingenuous manner, in Dominica.
