Dominican Historian, Dr Lennox Honychurch sees issues with the site selected for the construction of the recently completed Five Star Kempinski Resort and Spa in the Cabrits, Portsmouth swamp area.
The fears and concerns of flooding has now proven to be a reality, as recently, severe flooding has been affecting guest experience at the Resort. Many local Engineers and citizens are now questioning the competence of the engineers & contractors, who constructed this resort. Lennox Honychurch was quoted as saying the following, “the whole slope across from the Cabrits swamp feeds into the swamp and Kempinski area. With increased housing on the slopes and the new culverts guiding more water under the road into the swamp, we can expect to see more of this in the future. I drew some attention to this, but some said I am an obstructionist, that I am not an engineer. I know the swamp since childhood, so nowadays I’m just watching". Record-breaking busiest Atlantic Hurricane Season draws to an end today 30th November. The prediction in August was for an extremely active season with 25 named storms, 11 hurricanes and 6 major hurricanes. This season surpassed the 2005 season which produced 28 named storms and produced 31 tropical depressions. An average season would produce 12 named storms. 6 hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes. However thankfully, Dominica was not directly impacted this season. The season officially ends today Nov. 30, but it is still possible for additional storms to develop as long as conditions are favorable The public is therefore advised to remain vigilant and to monitor the weather updates issued by the Dominica Meteorological Service. The United Workers Party disapproves of the DLP administration’s insistence on awarding construction contracts to foreign construction companies and workers over Dominican Skilled contractors and workers.
