UWI Open Campus Program Officer, and Dominica Olympic Committee Treasurer, Dr Barry Casimir, worries that low-income students are having difficulties getting financing to pursue higher education. Speaking on Q95 FM recently, he explained the causes of this Dilemma. Dr. Casimir says the best way to fix this problem in the short term is to create programs & systems which directly address low-income students. The youth are gearing up to have their voices heard come this year's CARICOM Day 2021, which is observed on the first Monday in July each year. The day marks the signing of the Treaty of Chaguaramas on this day in 1973. The treaty established the Caribbean Community & Common Market, which would later become Caribbean Community (CARICOM).The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat celebrates CARICOM Day each year on July 4, 2021. This year is celebrated with the ‘I Am CARICOM’ campaign, which is being rolled out across the Community to promote the CARICOM Identity and Spirit of Community. The campaign seeks to achieve this objective by providing information to increase visibility, awareness and understanding of the Caribbean Community including its geography, institutions, governance structure, policies, and the benefits of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME). An approaching Tropical Wave is expected to continue affecting the island into Thursday. Showers, which could be moderate to heavy at times and thunderstorm activity, together with an increase in wind speeds are expected across the Lesser Antilles, including Dominica, particularly during the afternoon. People living in or traversing areas prone to flooding, landslides and falling rocks should be on alert over the next 48 to 72 hours. A flood watch or warning may be required from this afternoon. An area of low pressure associated with another tropical wave could become a tropical depression on its approach to the islands. This system is expected to affect the area by Friday into Saturday. Based on current projections, tropical storm-like conditions with winds gusting to tropical storm force and rainfall amounts of 60mm to 100mm (2.5in to 4in) in moderate to heavy showers are possible, from Friday afternoon. Political Scientist and Lecturer, Dr. Dion George, is pleased with the move in making the National Assessment available to all as well as providing opportunities for all Students to attend Secondary School. Dr. George seeks to encourage students who barely passed the National Assessment, stating that life has just begun, and barely passing an exam does not determine your overall academic excellence as one moves forward in the education system. Register of Cooperatives, Mariette Canoville says the Cooperative Society is one big movement, but the non-financial cooperatives over the years have been struggling to find their way. She says the Cooperative Division is now focused on developing, non-financial cooperatives. Canoville says financial cooperatives should see the need to partner with the non-financial cooperatives.
