By tonight into Thursday, a tropical wave is projected to generate an increase in cloudiness with showers and thunderstorm activity across Dominica. As a result of this approaching tropical wave, a flood watch or warning may be required. People in areas prone to flooding, landslides and falling rocks should exercise caution throughout this afternoon and rest of the week as the area is projected to remain moist and unstable. Moderate seas are expected during the next 24 hours with wave heights peaking near 8.0ft. A Small Craft Advisory is in effect for above normal seas. Small craft operators and sea bathers, particularly on the east coast, are advised to exercise caution. A further increase to 10ft can be expected by tomorrow.

National Epidemiologist in the Ministry of health Dr. Shalauddin Ahmeh shares some key points on pre-arrival screening on entry into Dominica ports. The ministry of health announced the total number of confirmed covid19 cases in Dominica stand as at 31, as of September 29, 2020. Dr. Ahmed says all travelers seeking to enter into Dominica are required to fill in the online health questionnaire, and one must have a negative test result within 72 hours of the arrival date. The Office of the Prime Minister, Ministry of Trade, Commerce, Entrepreneurship, Innovation, Business, and Export Development, the Organization of American States (OAS), and the Dominica Association of Industry and Commerce (DAIC) are hosting the first-ever Dominica Entrepreneurship and Innovation HUB Workshop (EIHUB) for Young Entrepreneurs. The objective of this workshop is to provide Entrepreneurs with the support and knowledge needed to manage and run profitable and resilient business enterprises. The first phase of the EIHUB will consist of a one-week foundational program to be held October 4-9th, 2020 at the Jungle Bay Eco-Resorts in Soufriere for 33 young Dominican entrepreneurs. The program will feature presentations and practical sessions from mentors and experts who will address fundamental concepts of business development, innovation, resilience, digital transformation, and technology. Following the week of activities, participants will continue to receive support and mentorship through targeted sessions with special emphasis on further developing their project concepts and business interests. Covid certified Taxi Operator Mr. Ken George Dill shares a snapshot of what operations have been like since the reopening of borders during this Covid19 season. Speaking at the National Covid19 Press briefing, Mr. Dill shared a bit of the protocols implemented thus far for certified Taxi Operators. Some of these include, mandatory face masks, no passengers should be at the front of the vehicle with the driver, and mandatory temporary checks just to name a few. In response to Businessman and Owner of WICE Q95 FM Radio Sheridan Gregoire’s question, re the Skerrit Administration’s hiring of Legal Luminary Sir Dennis Byron as a Consultant to advance Dominica’s Electoral Reform Process, DLP Attorney General Levi Peter gave his viewson the Roosevelt Skerrit Administration’s action in that regard. Executive Member of the Dominica Public Service Union and Former President of the Dominica Nurses Association, Rosie Felix, says the National Health Commission’s (NHC) proposed Dominica Hospitals Authority Bill, exposes Health Workers to victimization. Felix points out that regardless of the recent statements of NHC’s member and Former President of Dominica Eliud Thaddeus Williams, this Bill in its current form, removes Union Protection from employees, while taking away current employment benefits in law for Health Workers. Rosie Felix told Q95 recently, she believes this bill will be amended appropriately due to the stance taken against the NHC’s current proposals, by Public Officers and their respective Unions at this time. CEO and Owner of WICE Q95 FM Radio Sheridan Gregoire (Mr G) calls for the eradication of mendicancy and dependency on political handouts in Dominica and questions the need to hire Sir Dennis Byron as a Consultant to advance Electoral Reform in Dominica, as well as the failure to include Campaign Finance Reform in the terms of reference given to Sir Byron. Mr G confirms that recent documents reveal that Sir Dennis Byron will be paid approximately some EC $500,000 dollars for that consultancy. He says this sidelining of the non-functional Electoral Commission – which has been without a chair for some eight months now, is contrary to the constitution of Dominica. Dominica’s High Court Criminal Sessions have recommenced. Ray Florent pleaded not guilty to Sept. 28, 2012, murder of Eddie Lewis. He was on bail, however, he was unable to present his surety to the court and as a result he is now on remand at the state Prison.
Meantime, Murder accused Rodman Moses Lewis entered a not guilty plea as the Criminal Session trial commenced, and his matter is adjourned to October 3, 2020. Jeremiah Albert Williams of Marigot who has a history of mental illness was to undergo a psychiatric assessment evaluation as requested from his lawyer to determine his ability to plead. Romanus John Charles of Pointe Michel entered a not guilty plea to grievous bodily harm (GBH) and unlawful wounding at the high court. This incident occurred on Aug 20, 2015, and Lee Michael Charles was the victim, the court adjourned this case to be heard on October 23rd, 2020. In more court news, Reginald Jean Jacques of Bath Estate was reportedly sick and is currently a patient at the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH), so his matter was adjourned to October 23, 2020 for arraignment. Prisma Joseph has pleaded guilty to deception and is represented by Peter Alleyne. The facts of the matter will be outlined to the court in November of 2020. Also, Mandel Joseph pleaded not guilty to grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent and unlawful wounding, this incident occurred on February 10th, 2018, in Vieille Case. The matter is also adjourned to 23rd, October 2020, for case management he remains on bail. And Denny Shillingford of St. Joseph pleaded guilty for taking conveyance. The incident occurred in Mahaut on January 4th, 2016. Shillingford asked the court for a non-custodial sentence, as he claims he is fed up with the Dominica State Prison (DSP). He also requested a psychiatric assessment evaluation to determine why he committed the crime. His Sentencing will be November 5, 2020. |
