celebration of the life and legacy of the late Delmance Ras Mo Moses, who passed away in the United States on April 25, 2024, will be held this Sunday, June 2, 2024, at 5 p.m. Former colleagues from the Movement for Cultural Awareness (MCA) and the Eastern Caribbean Popular Theatre Organization (ECPTO) will honor his memory. Ras Mo dedicated his youth and adult years to the advancement of arts and culture in Dominica & the surrounding region.
He was widely admired for his exceptional talent as a drummer, performance poet, writer, and cultural animator, making significant contributions through his involvement with MCA and ECPTO. Ras Mo demonstrated that complex societal issues and spiritual challenges could be addressed through collective action, social organization, and the transformative power of arts and culture.

In a seminar hosted by the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank on May 30, 2024, Economist & Consultant Dr Sumin Chun stressed the importance of paying attention to global regulations beyond the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union (ECCU). Speaking under the theme "Fundamentals of Climate-related Risks," Dr. Chun highlighted the significance of international carbon-related policies. Former Forest Officer of Dominica's Forestry, Wildlife & Parks Division, Stephen Durand, has revealed major insights into the origin & introduction of the Cuban Tree Frog into Dominica. The alleges that blame falls squarely on a Hotel and Spa in the Cabrits area in Portsmouth. Mr. Durand stated on Thursday, that under his supervision as Head of the Forestry’s Research Desk at the time, he was reliably informed that containers brought into Dominica for constructing the Resort, were opened on site at Portsmouth - releasing the invasive species of the Cuban Tree Frog in Portsmouth. Additionally, Durand shed light on the level of neglect in handling the unwanted release of the Cuban Tree Frog when they became visible to construction workers on site - after forestry was informed of its appearance on the construction site - Forestry officials came on site to confirm and strategize a major campaign to eradicate the then small population of the Cuban Tree Frog. May 30,2024 saw a ecstatic match held at the DFA Technical Centre - commencing week five of the DFA Division-One League. Police SC and Sugar George Wayne George Academy faced off in an intense match. Christophe Jervier was the MVP, scoring 6 goals, and he led Sugar George Wayne George Academy to victory over the Police SC. The Other strikers who scored goals for Wayne George Academy., were Loobens Mesidor and Sherwin LaBassiere. Police SC netted four goals, never giving up until the very end. Clifford Telemacque scored twice for Police SC, while Ojara Jarvis and Tianny Clarke scored one goal each.
The Independent Regulatory Commission (IRC) has reached its final decision regarding the Depreciation Study, submitted by DOMLEC, as part an ongoing Tariff Review. The Depreciation Study is said to be a critical component of determining the suitable method of calculating depreciation of DOMLEC’s physical assets. The consultation on the Depreciation Study opened in January 2024 and ended in April 2024. It began with the publication of a consultative document, followed by an in-person public meeting on February 22. IRC presenters & DOMLEC’s consultant provided clarification and responded to questions from stakeholders. Stakeholders’ responses to specific consultation questions were documented. IRC Executive Director Justinn Kase says stakeholders were informed that the higher the depreciation expense, the higher electricity rates would be in Dominica. Mr Kase revealed that following the IRC ‘s decision- as outlined in its Document Reference No: 2024/001/D - being made public on May 30, 2024; it will be published in the Official Gazette. DOMLEC is now obligated to make the necessary amendments to its Depreciation Policy, that aligns with IRC’s approval of its Depreciation Study. Justinn Kase, IRC’s Executive Director.
Circle of Friends, a non-profit agency dedicated to addressing the needs of persons with disabilities, particularly youth and children, proudly announced its participation in the side event - Enabling Inclusion: Addressing Disability Challenges. at the 4th International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS4) in Antigua and Barbuda.
The side event, held on May 30, 2024, brought together organizations representing persons with disabilities and special needs worldwide, to discuss the importance of investing in human capital in SIDS, by addressing disability and special needs issues & harnessing the potential of people with disabilities. Beverly LeBlanc, Executive Director of Circle of Friends Inc, expressed the significance of this milestone, stating, “This is really a momentous occasion for us, particularly after having worked for 14 years together in our different meetings, weekly meetings. And then we had the declaration of St. John’s, which was approved because it was developed in 2023. And then now we are here. So this is a milestone for us as an organization of persons with disabilities, showing that if we work together, we can achieve much.” The side event emphasized the importance of inclusion in the sustainable development of people with disabilities. Bernard Warner, President of The Antigua and Barbuda Association for Persons Living with Disabilities (ABAPD), highlighted the collective effort of regional organizations. Kerwin Thomas, President of the Disabled People International Trinidad and Tobago Chapter said, “This conference adds some value in terms of how we move things forward for the region.” Joshuanette Francis, President of Good Humans 268, emphasized the need for action beyond the conference, saying, “We have to design programs, projects, partnerships, and policies to achieve sustainable development goals 10 & 11.”The side event dubbed, Enabling Inclusion: Addressing Disability Challenges, marks a significant step forward in the global effort to address the needs of persons with disabilities and special needs in Small Island Developing States. Photo: The Sun For much of 2023, the Dominica Council on Ageing has been negotiating for the establishment of a Medical Insurance Group Plan for members of the organization. However, some insurance companies have shied away from partnering with the DCOA to make this a reality, viewing the age of the proposed grouping as a disadvantage. However, DCOA President Nigel Lawrence told media at the DCOA’s AGM at the St. Alphonsus Parish Hall in Goodwill, on May 30, 2024, the Council will not relent on this mission, as it is convinced that Medical Insurance is needed for improved care & affordability for older persons. Speaking on Q95’s Talk on The Block Show on Thursday, Forestry Officer of Dominica’s Forestry Division, Jeanelle Brisbane reported that the Cuban Tree Frog has now become heavily populated in Dominica, but it has actually been on island for the past 6 years since 2018. She revealed that the Frogs were found to have entered the island via the seaport in Portsmouth in 2018. Brisbane warns that the mucus on the Cuban Tree Frog is toxic and must be washed even if the frog touches your clothes or object, wash the surface thoroughly to avoid any adverse reactions. Country Coordinator of the OECS-SAC Project, Dr. Nadia Pacquette-Anselm, lauds the efforts of the Eighteen Farmers who successfully completed their training from the White Potato Training School Program, on May 29, 2024. Pacquette-Anselm said this particular cohort of farmers was special, as prior to this training, Farmers from the East Agricultural Region were not interested in planting White Potatoes for the export market. She called on the farmers at the graduation ceremony, to pass on the knowledge they acquired to increase supply for this crop on the east of the island.
