Plans are already in place for the 11th Phenomenal Caribbean Women Symposium in Dominica in 2021.That’s according to CEO of VF Inc Dr. Valda Henry, she pointed out that the next symposium will provide effective advocacy for the vulnerable, she anticipates that this path for VF Inc will be challenging but successful. Health Minister Dr Irving McIntyre says all district medical officers in Dominica have been alerted of the corona-virus situation coming out of Wuhan City - China. Secondly ambulance and immigration officers have been alerted through the international health regulation steering committee, with a meeting scheduled for today. The minister outlined other measures taken since the outbreak of the virus. Meantime, Dr McIntyre says an initial alert was sent to healthcare professionals, i.e. the hospital and district staff on January 10th, prior to the human to human transmission occurrence. He listed other precautionary measures. Dr McIntyre says Dominican students studying in china, are being advised to remain in China, which the government considers to be safest option at present. President of the Dominica Manufacturer's Association (DMA) Severin McKenzie says export marketing Dominican products is not their main problem. He says the real issue is that the products to market are not available. He was speaking at a national consultation for Manufacturers on Wednesday. McKenzie says the DMA has dedicated 2020 as the year to step up production for sustainable production and export. Director of Agriculture Ricky Brumant says government wants to build an agricultural sector that is modern and renewed, with a team that will expose the citizens of the island to a developing sector that will continue to do good work. CEO of VF Inc and Head of the Mas Camp Entertainment Dr. Valda Henry, says while this year’s 10th edition of the Phenomenal Caribbean Women Symposium had the lowest turnout of registered participants, the symposium was still a success. Under the leadership of Pastor Cameron Robin, the Word Revival Center in Wesley launched its Youth Evangelism Program on 26th January 2020.
According to Pastor Robin, the program seeks to assist students in completing their assignments, providing computer and internet access and a mini library. It also offers an after-school program on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 4:00- 5:30 pm to the students. Social activities such as karaoke and movie nights will be implemented to support positive social interaction. Word Revival with the help of a benefactor assembly in the United States has completed a well-equipped playground and basketball court. The program is expected to commence sometime in February and will initially serve students of Grades 5 and 6 of the Wesley Primary School. Pastor Robin says an evangelistic approach will be utilized throughout the program to meet the child’s spiritual needs and introduce them to the unconditional love of Christ. Program Director and secondary school teacher Edith Williams says the program will be varied in its attempt to meet the needs of the youth. Chairman of the Dominica Freedom Party Johnson Boston says the party’s move to side with the United Workers Party in the 2019 General Elections, was strategic and the best move for the party at that time, considering what he said, is the poor state of the economy, under the current Dominica Labour Party. Both the Dominica Freedom Party and the United Workers Party currently take the position that the 2019 December 06th General Elections were not conducted in a fair approach, stressing on the refusal of the Electoral Commission to implement appropriate reform measures. “In the next two years, the Dominica State College will graduate 312 skilled technology majors in the field of Agriculture, Building and Civil Engineering, Architectural Technology, Plumbing Technology, Electrical Engineering, Refrigeration and Air- conditioning, Mechanical Engineering, and Electronic Engineering”. That’s according to Dr Donald Peters, President of the Dominica State College, at a panel discussion at the National Consultation on the Climate Resilience & Recovery Plan organized by Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica. Peters says this is in keeping with the college’s promise in working towards the goal of making Dominica the first Climate Resilient Country in the world. Dr. Peters is convinced that the students are listening and making the right decisions to ensure that we become a resilient people. He compared the number of students before 2017 and this present day who are being trained in the technical skilled area at the college. In his words, “Before 2017 the average number of students doing technical programs was 160 per graduating class to 312 in 2020. This s amazing.” The Dominica State College is also working on two other projects, the Rotary Distance Learning Project and SAGE- Skills to Access the Green Economy, which are geared towards increasing the number of women and indigenous persons with technical skills. These projects will further assist Dominica businesses to become more competitive and adaptive to climate change. Concerning the Rotary Distance Learning Project, the college is teaming up with Rotary Canada which will provide funding of materials to deliver technical education to remote sites to students who are unable to come to town. The second project, which focuses on technical education, is funded by the Canadian government. Through their funding, the college has partnered with Algonquin College and Dalhousie University to undertake a project called SAGE- Skills to Access the Green Economy. SAGE is a five year (2019-2024) funded project by the government of Canada (CI CAN). The training program covered by the project will be in the areas of Water and Coastal Management, Eco-Tourism, Agriculture, and Construction. The training program is meant to deliver skills that meet economic and environmental needs of the region. Countries selected to benefit from the SAGE program are Belize, Grenada, Guyana, St. Lucia and Dominica.
